To Fort Stockton

Did the five plus hour drive from San Antonio to Fort Stockton today. Fort Stockton is our staging area for the run down to Big Bend National Park for some camping day after tomorrow. After getting through the Hill Country west of San Antonio, the terrain gets desolate and, for us east coasters, other worldly. It's not exactly pure desert and it's not exactly flat. It is very sparsely populated though and there were stretches where there were no towns and very little traffic even though we were on Interstate 10. Also, it was the first time I've seen a posted speed limit of 80 MPH. Fort Stockton is small and friendly and, as of check-in,  we were the only guests at a fairly new three story Sleep Inn. Not much to comment on the photos, just sharing what we saw today.

Yay! Green Energy.

Beep! Beep!

An occasional river...

...and cows, of course.

Well, you know we had lunch. Since there wasn't much to eat on the way here (we never eat fast food unless it's an extreme emergency), by the time we got to Fort Stockton we were pretty hungry. We found a Mexican restaurant named Alfredo's a few blocks down from our hotel. It was the awesomest Mexican food we've had in Texas. And the service was outstandingly friendly. I can't wait to go back to try the tamales.

Today, I went with the Beef Flautas, served with the usual sides.

Astral Wendy went with the Chicken Fajitas. For review purposes
only, I was forced to try some. Really, really, really good.

I don't know if this is Big Sky country but the sunsets are divine.

  1. I think that qualifies as Pretty Big Sky Country!

  2. Wow! the landscapes are surreal...especially the road cutting through the mountain and the peak that looks like a pagoda.

@Wen...all you need to do is photoshop some lips in the sky and you will have a Man Ray- esque masterpiece on your hands!

  3. Hey Erica... I was thinking along the same lines, but I don't have photoshop. I think a real artist could paint that in oil and it would be delicious. Perhaps a real artist like you! XOXO
